For years now, new and emerging independent brands have entered the fashion industry with the promise of prioritizing sustainable and ethical practices. Yet, very few of those brands act in ways that prove any type of commitment to sustainability, leaving consumers disappointed and discouraged.

However, long before sustainability became the latest fashion trend, American fashion designer Karen Kane and her husband, Lonnie, understood the need for a brand to constantly deliver on their promises. In 1979, the two newlyweds started working in the garage of their own home, selling the very first tops of Karen Kane apparel.  Granted, the brand (and family) has come a long way since then, but still recognizes how important it is for consumers to know what they stand for, so that women of all ages, sizes, and fit can shop confidently and sustainably.

"We believe women should feel beautiful and comfortable, always. We create products with passion and integrity, guided by respect for our people and planet."

- Karen Kane

To ensure this respect, the brand is transparent with everything that they do at both the corporate and product level. The brand offers benefit packages to all full-time employees and has even created ongoing sustainability education for all of its workers in order to better promote ethical business practices. Moreover, starting this year, the brand plans to set "annual resource reduction goals" to ensure accountability and responsibility of their environmental impact. The brand also uses post-consumer recycled packaging and is working towards increasing the "percentage of recycled and sustainably-sourced textiles." As of right now, 35% of the total energy used at the the brand's manufacturing facility in California is from renewable resources.
